I had a recent conversation with a snivelling, smooth-talking kiruv klown that sent my blood pressure to catastrophic levels. You see, our friend here the kiruv klown had absolutely no problem with college absolutely whatsoever--as long as you don't go or it's online or something. Don't ask.
He related proudly that he supports his son in Lakewood. 27-year old kid whom he's proudly supported the last five years, and plans on continuing to support for many more. Of course, his measly kiruv salary hardly allows for it, so what does he do? "Collects." What more can I say?
Extremely proud of his sons' high school which granted them a diploma after -- get this -- three years of correspondence work post-high school. A far cry from my high school which DOESN'T GIVE YOU A DIPLOMA. EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRR.......
He never went to college and he has no problem with that.
His sons never went or will go to college and that's fine with him.
He has no problem with the current Lakewood system destroying the entire Orthodox world. From his perspective, it's a good thing that Torah is becoming such an important ideal. Where the money will come from is not his concern. The fact that he and his wretched system is condemning the masses to horrid lives of misery and poverty doesn't bother him in the slightest. (Hey, there's always welfare to steal and a government to cheat.) So long as no one's forgetting to talk to the walls three times a day (or more) or eating non-kosher bagels ch"v, the world will keep spinning happily. Oh, and those "few" kids who nebbach don't have what it takes to be a greasy shnorrer, well...well...well... they're just collateral damage, "korbonos" as he so eloquently puts it.

What else did you expect of a kiruv klown? Thanks and glad to see you are still going strong!
ReplyDeleteWell just by the way, most kids graduating from college today can't get a job. A bachelor's or master's today is just a piece of paper.
ReplyDeletejp - odds increase SUBSTANTIALLY when you are educated and speak the language. (you ever hear a guy from lakewood speak english? sheesh)

Ok, but I'm just pointing out that today the middle class seems to be rapidly dying. Either get a high school diploma and some vocational training and settle for a lower class standard of living or, at the other extreme, go for a doctorate, probably in health care. There a few opportunities in between.
ReplyDeleteare you on drugs? therefore dont educate yourself, becasue you probably wont make it without a PHD?!?!?
ReplyDeletewe're just talking about being able to (see if you can follow) SUPPORT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. most yeshiva guys cannot - and a basic high school and collegiate education will greatly increase the odds of that occuring. the fact that yeshiva guys are not given those tools and encouraged to live off others is nothing short of g'neiva of the worst kind

Oy!
ReplyDeleteOTD, welcome back bud! After a lengthy sabbatical, it's great to hear from you!
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Kiruv Klown, and particularly, the Lakewood lifestyle in general, as long as the Haredim pursue their slothful habit of abandoning productive work for 24/7 practice of religion, disaster will ensue. The Haredim are probably the most despised demographic among Israeli Jews. Within a generation or two, the local Ultra-Orthodox Jewish population explosion will have taken its toll on the New York metro area. Lakewood-style Haredim who refuse to work because their religion shuns most professions, and because what work is permissible interferes with their 24/7 Torah study, would be stuck supporting their large households on welfare, leeching off the taxpayer. A religious community almost entirely composed of "professional clergy" is not economically sustainable. In most Jewish denominations, rabbis comprise a small minority of the population, as with ministers among Protestants, or even the complex hierarchy of deacons/priests/bishops among Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, which forms a small minority of Catholic or Orthodox Christian communities. How does a community expect to support the "rabbis" when just about every man is a "rabbi" by default? A society almost entirely composed of clergy is not economically viable.
The worst part is, when a growing population of welfare queens refuses to work, the economy will suffer. I fear that if the growth of adherents to the yeshivish lifestyle goes unchecked, anti-Semitism will rise in the area (some of the worst probably being of the Jew-on-Jew variety)! If these Haredi chillul hashems refuse to work in a struggling economy, the outlook will be grim.
As for the elephant in the room, I noticed that the Village Idiot of the J-Blogosphere intruded here by posting two comments uninvited. Nonetheless, we can thank the village idiot for once again revealing what a fucking imbecile he is by posting his retarded non sequitur that everyone should avoid college because college graduates are having challenges finding work, unless one plans on attaining a PHD or a law or medical degree. Of course, the village idiot probably does not want anyone to go to college because they might learn about such subversive ideas as evolution, heliocentricism, or history. This would of course drive many Frum students OTD, especially the ultra-Frum once their worldview based on an ultra-literalist reading of the Torah and Talmud (and all the creationism, geocentricism, magic, occultic medical advice, and other ancient nonsense) is knocked down by a modern education. Then again, perhaps if he actually went to college at some point he would be employable and he would not have to be a parasite once his savings run out. At least the old faygeleh had the decency to minimize his “fruitfulness” and “multiplicity” and thus reduce his burden on the taxpayers of New York State.
I am a fourteen yr old Jewish girl in the orthadox world who is having Manu troubles with all the laws and restrictions being pushed down my throat. Your writings make me feel like I'm not alone. Thank you.
