BIXI: Stay far away

This post is entirely irrelevant to most of you so you may disregard it. This post is about a bad experience I had with a bike sharing program, and its purpose is to warn others so they don't make the same mistake I did.

There is a bike sharing program near where I live called BIXI. There are bike docks around the city where you can take out bikes. You pay with a credit card, and the fee is $5 a day. What I didn't realize is there are ADDITIONAL fees of $4 for 60-90 minutes and an ADDITIONAL $8 for every half hour above that. I naively rented my "$5 a day" bike and proceeded to have a marvelous time biking throughout the town for 7 hours. I returned the bike carefully and went on with my day. Two weeks later, I get a credit card charge for $35. The lady on the phone politely informed me that my 7 hours really costs 115 and some-odd dollars, and they had graciously bumped it down to $35 because it was my first time, and they understood I probably did not intend to spend a king's ransom on a stupid bike.

I am very annoyed that not only was I charged a lot more than I had anticipated, but that BIXI was so expensive and I would probably never have the opportunity to rent from them again. $115 for 7 hours, are you freaking kidding me? Below is the email I sent the company. I will update this post when I get a response from the company.

I rented a BIXI bike a few weeks ago. I was under the impression that a 24 hour rental period was only $5. I was shocked to see my credit card statement this morning showing a fee of $35.65. I called BIXI customer service, and the friendly representative informed me that I had taken the bike for 7 hours, and the $5 daily fee only included the first half hour, and there were additional fees for longer usage. I am very upset that I was charged so much more than I expected, and I'm even more upset that BIXI's pricing system is so - frankly - outrageous. I had very much enjoyed my BIXI experience up until that point, and I had commented positively on my BIXI experience to the many passerby who noticed my BIXI bike and commented about it. I had recommended BIXI to many family and friends, because I thought it was a fun, enjoyable, and most of all affordable experience. Now that I realize a few hours costs $40-50 and a full 24 hour period costs something approaching thousands of dollars I will be sure to inform all my friends and family to stay far away from BIXI. I am a student, and live on a very tight budget. I barely have money to put food on the table, and if I had hundreds of dollars to blow on a bike, it certainly wouldn't be on a rented bike for mere hours.

I am very disappointed that I was charged so much more than I expected, and equally as disappointed to realize how out of reach BIXI is for myself and many others like me who earn less than six-figure salaries, and may find the promising BIXI experience hopelessly out of reach for them and their cohorts not living on the Bridle Path. I demand not only a full refund but a precise explanation for why BIXI bikes are so atrociously expensive, and what I should tell all the people who are sure to ask me what I think of BIXI. Should I tell them it's only good if you need it for an hour or so? And to watch out if you need it for longer because you will be charged an arm and a leg?

I am personally devastated to know that I will no longer be able to rent BIXI bikes or recommend them to friends. I was hoping to go on a biking trip for a few hours with my girlfriend next weekend. It will cost close to a hundred dollars with BIXI, so that is no longer an option. Who uses a bike for 30 minutes or less, or even an hour or two? If I have a bike I want to be able to use it for a few hours and enjoy the sun. That will no longer be an option for me with BIXI, as 4 hours costs $50 AND IT GOES UP BY $8 EVERY HALF HOUR AFTER THAT. What am I renting already, DIAMONDS?????!!!!!!!!

  1. You can go to Target or Toy-R-Us and buy a not-horrible bike for less than that!

  2. I found this paragraph on the web:

"To benefit from continued free usage for an extended period of time, simply make sure to re-dock the bike at another BIXI station before the first 30 minutes have elapsed (or 45 minutes if subscribed to a monthly or yearly membership). Wait two minutes for the system to reset and THEN select the same or a new bike from the docking station, again, ensuring to re-dock at another station within 30 minutes. As long as the bike is constantly redocked within 30-minute blocks, no usage charges apply."

Not helpful when you want to go on a long ride, but if you just need it to do a bunch of errands that are less than a 30 minute drive from different BIXI stations, it could help. I found it on this website about BIXI in Montreal:

    http://montreal.about.com/od/gettingaroundtown/a/public_bikes.htm

The "passes" at first sound great, until you realize they are NOT passes but memberships, and that you still need to pay per use each time you ride for longer than 30 minutes. Logically, if you bought a monthly membership and used it to commute to work daily, and you have a BIXI station near work and home and the ride was less than 30 minutes - that would be a sweet deal. Almost cheaper than transit.

  3. The point of these bike systems is to get from point A to B by taking a bike rather than a car or taxi. Assists in reduction of traffic congestion. They are not targeting customers who will rent for a full day and the pricing reflects that.

  4. We have something like this called CaBi in DC. Anonymous above is right.

  5. Just had the same experience where I rented a couple of bikes for a couple of hours and then got a $120 charge on my card. Called them up to dispute and they credited me $100 because they realized I was not sure how it worked. (didn't realize I needed a master in finance to rent a bike).
It was nice that they sorted it out for me, but it's a shame I will never use them again. You could buy a beater bike off craigslist every time you wanted to ride and it would be cheaper (and likely better) than using bixi. i give that company 6 months before they go under. Pity because I have seen simpler, cheaper and more effective business models across Europe, was thinking we were finally getting the same here.

  6. We just had BIXI installed in Toronto. The charges are clearly posted at every BIXI station. It's not the companies fault you're too stupid to read or understand them.

The reason for the additional charges isn't a cash grab, it's to keep the bikes in circulation, and prevent people from storing them in their garage overnight. If you need the bike for over 30 minutes, sign it in and take it back out again.

To the poster above me, if you can't understand the terms, you probably shouldn't have a credit card.

    0-30 min (included)
    31-60 min (+1.50)
    61-90 min (+4.00)
    each half hour above (+8)
    (in Toronto)

  7. Anonymous 8:44, there is no need to get personal.

I agree with Anonymous 1:22 that it is a cash grab, and that the company will be gone in a few months. I think the pricing is somewhat misleading and they have a greater interest in selling their product than in warning customers of their outrageous prices. No matter how many times I'm told that the high prices are to keep bikes at the stations and make it undesirable for people to keep them overnight, I simply can't wrap my mind around prices like $369 a day (do the math) for renting a bike. This is 10 times the price of renting a car, and it is beyond ridiculous.

There are many others who are dissatisfied with Bixi, as a quick google search reveals. This blogger says, "I misread their confusing rental fee stickers on the machine, despite the fact I read them in detail... My friend who rented it didn’t even understand and interpreted their fee system completely different then me, and yet we’re both educated professionals." I thought the $5 was a flat fee for a day, and those other prices were for people who wanted it for under an hour or so; who were looking to spend even less than $5 a day. Here are some other links of dissatisfied users, including this interesting page mentioned above by Modern Girl.

Oh, and I've sent two emails to Bixi over the last two weeks and I have yet to hear from them

  8. I signed up for the year membership, 80-90 and his comes with 45 minute free-period. The get from point a to point B it's perfect. really, really perfect.

To ride around all day owning one's own bike is the way to go. I hope you'll go this way. Montreal and the region(s) outside montreal are great for biking and have plenty of awesome bike infrastructure.

OTD: this is not a system based around renting a bike out all day. It is to provide quick point A-to-B transportation, and then be docked and used by another person many times a day. This distinction is important, and when you have it figured out: you ride, dock the bike, visit around on foot, then take out a bixi and ride to the next place.

Again, this is not a system based around renting a bike out all day.

  9. I was under the impression that it was great for tourists as well. I have a friend visiting and we decided to go to the island for a ride... looking into the pricing I was surprised as I thought like most it was $5 per day. Very disappointed. There is a man selling $40 bikes from his yard nearby..(not stolen) decided to buy one of those instead..
